Open standards and technologies from the sovereign cloud ecosystem around ALASCA and SCS, along with Kubernetes as an abstraction layer, promise to simplify switching cloud providers. However, experience shows that migrating productive systems in practice is often complex and risky: For example, many manual migration attempts are necessary because concerns like backups or user management fail in the target environment, potentially causing downtimes.
This talk addresses these challenges by presenting a Kubernetes-native concept for automated, incremental cloud switching. The approach leverages cloud-native patterns, open-source software, and is itself available as an open-source reference implementation that is already used in production. We have implemented it as part of our open source operations platform for tool stacks (Cloudogu EcoSystem), which enhances the freedom of choice and sovereignty offered by SCS to end-users.
