Open Source software is built by people, but great Open Source projects are built by communities.
What started as a quick prototype during the ALASCA Hackathon 2025 to help a fellow community member solve a practical problem has since evolved into a production application for OpenStack resource reporting and billing, running as part of a sovereign AI cloud deployment. In this talk, we’ll share the journey from hackathon idea to production software, the decisions that shaped the platform, and how the project is evolving into a reusable Open Source building block for the broader ecosystem.
More importantly, we’ll explore why this project could never have started inside a traditional customer relationship. It was born from trust, curiosity and a shared desire to solve a real problem. No contracts, no business plans. That trust not only led to production software but also created lasting collaboration and value for everyone involved and beyond.
Our experience shows that strong communities don’t just sustain Open Source. They create the conditions that allow meaningful innovation to happen.
