Open standards and technologies from the sovereign cloud ecosystem centred on ALASCA and SCS, together with Kubernetes as an abstraction layer, promise to simplify the process of switching cloud providers. However, experience shows that migrating production systems in practice is often complex and risky: for example, many manual migration attempts are necessary because issues such as backups or user management fail in the target environment, potentially causing downtime.
This talk addresses these challenges by presenting a Kubernetes-native concept for automated, incremental cloud switching. The approach utilises cloud-native patterns and open-source software, and is itself available as an open-source reference implementation that is already in use in production. We have implemented it as part of our open-source operations platform for tool stacks (Cloudogu EcoSystem), which enhances the freedom of choice and sovereignty offered by SCS to end-users.
