Open-source software is built by people, but great open-source projects are built by communities.
What began as a quick prototype during the ALASCA Hackathon 2025 to help a fellow community member solve a practical problem has since evolved into a production application for OpenStack resource reporting and billing, running as part of a sovereign AI cloud deployment. In this talk, we’ll share the journey from hackathon idea to production software, the decisions that shaped the platform, and how the project is evolving into a reusable open-source building block for the wider ecosystem.
More importantly, we’ll explore why this project could never have got off the ground within a traditional customer relationship. It arose from trust, curiosity and a shared desire to solve a real problem. No contracts, no business plans. That trust not only led to production-ready software but also fostered a lasting collaboration and created value for everyone involved and beyond.
Our experience shows that strong communities do more than simply sustain open source. They create the conditions that enable meaningful innovation to take place.
