ALASCA Summit 2024

Let's recap

It still feels surreal, but the very first ALASCA Summit actually happened! On October 29 and 30, we all came together at the Deutsches-Hygiene-Museum for two exciting days filled with presentations, workshops, games, and more.

The days leading up to the ALASCA Summit were quite a whirlwind, but also filled with much excitement. Alongside checking off the last items on our to-do lists, we had cool T-shirts, new (shiny!) stickers, and M&Ms with the Summit logo delivered. We made sure food and drinks were ready and that all participants, speakers, workshop leaders, and exhibitors were well prepared. Additionally, we also planned some fun games for even more entertainment.

Day 1 of the ALASCA Summit 2024

We opened the doors to the German Hygiene Museum at 8.30am, and to be honest we were a bit nervous - would people actually turn up? But you didn't disappoint us: by lunchtime there were already over 100 participants at the ALASCA Summit and the atmosphere was great! In addition to various talks that looked at the topics of cloud, open source and digital sovereignty from very different angles, we were also able to follow an interesting panel discussion on the topic of collaboration within and between open source communities. There were also three workshops where participants learnt about the basics of OpenStack, ALASCA's open source project Yaook, and baremetal provisioning with Cluster API and Metal.

The first day was rounded off with a fun evening event. In addition to PacMan, KubeInvaders, an LED race on a self-made racetrack and table football, the absolute highlight was a self-designed, customised Jeopardy! In true ALASCA style, the questions centred primarily around technical categories such as „HTTP Status Codes“ (alongside some extremely curious but equally funny outliers such as „Cologne Carnival“). Let's just say that the candidates had to work really hard - the questions were tricky! But they bravely fought their way through and entertained the audience brilliantly.

Day 2 of the ALASCA Summit 2024

Still a little tired from the previous evening, we found ourselves back at the German Hygiene Museum on the morning of day 2. However, the first presentations (and a strong coffee) quickly revitalised us. In addition to various talks, there was another panel discussion on this day - this time on the future of ALASCA - as well as three workshops in the afternoon, namely on microvm.nix, ALASCA's open source project Krake, and the new OpenStack CLI written with Rust.

Time flew by, and before we knew it, after a closing speech from the Board, the ALASCA Summit 2024 had come to an end. After a warm farewell, we all made our way home, carrying many new ideas and insights with us.

Acknowledgement

Everything works better when we work together, which is why we would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing sponsors. Without your support, the ALASCA Summit 2024 would not have been possible and we greatly appreciate your contribution. We would also like to express our gratitude to our other official supporters from the open source community for their valuable support.

The heart of the ALASCA Summit was the exchange of knowledge, and for that, we owe a huge thank you to all speakers, workshop leaders, and moderators. Through a perfect mix of insightful content and engaging entertainment, you shared your ideas and experiences on cloud, open source, and digital sovereignty from various perspectives with us, helping to broaden our horizons.

Last but not least, we would of course like to thank YOU - the ALASCA community. You filled the halls of the German Hygiene Museum with life and a lot of joy. The atmosphere was great and your enthusiasm completely overwhelmed us. Thank you for your participation, your good humour, your friendly praise and your valuable suggestions for improvement.
