Tarook earns the CNCF-run Certified Kubernetes status

ALASCA | Tarook | CNCF Certification

We are excited to announce that Tarook, ALASCA’s open source tool for the lifecycle management of Kubernetes clusters, is now a Certified Kubernetes Distribution. The Kubernetes Software Conformance Certification is a program developed by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), of which ALASCA is member. The program validates that Kubernetes distributions meet strict technical criteria through self-testing. The certified status confirms that Tarook is interoperable with other certified Kubernetes distributions and platforms, aligning the project with the broader open source cloud ecosystem through shared standards.

Tarook is an open source tool that enables the declarative provisioning and management of Kubernetes clusters on bare-metal and OpenStack. It was initially developed as part of the project Yaook –also hosted by ALASCA– under the name of Yaook/Kubernetes. In 2024 Tarook took on the form of a high-flying Albatross and became a separate project, following its own development roadmap while at the same time ensuring compatibility with other ALASCA projects and open source tools. Applying for Kubernetes certification was a clear milestone in Tarook’s flight route, in line with the commitment to open standards, interoperability and consistency for users.

The certification process involves running a publicly available test suite that verifies that certified distributions behave consistently with the official upstream Kubernetes implementation. The process ensures transparency (you can check Tarook’s conformance process here ) and can be replicated by anyone interested in using the software. As part of the initial conformance process, Tarook has successfully passed the tests for Kubernetes v1.33. Maintaining the certified status requires timely updates, which ensures that Tarook will keep pace with upstream Kubernetes development in the future, including new features and security patches.

ALASCA and the Tarook team extend their thanks to all the developers who have contributed to Tarook with their technical skills, creativity and commitment to the project over the years. This certification is backed by collective community effort, driven by shared principles of openness, transparency, and technical readiness. Go Tarook!
