ALACA Newsletter #4

Foreword

Dear members, dear interested parties,

We are looking forward to an exciting 2024 and to starting the new year with lots of news.

Firstly, we are delighted that we have already been able to plan ahead with firmly scheduled presentations for our ALASCA Tech-Talks until May of this year. This shows that our format is being accepted and is becoming increasingly established as an important event. We are also looking forward to a special highlight in autumn this year: the first ALASCA Summit.

In addition, we were able to establish two new projects in ALASCA at the end of last year, which we would like to inform you about in this newsletter.

Have fun reading!

New projects in ALASCA

As already mentioned in our last newsletter, at the end of last year we were busy reviewing and onboarding new projects in our association. Today we are pleased to officially announce that ALASCA is now home to two more open source projects. One of them is Yake - Yet another Kubernetes Engine.

Yake Logo | The Installer and Lifecycle Management Tool for Gardener | A project by ALASCA

Yake (formerly known as 23KE) is a Gardener installer and lifecycle management tool that greatly simplifies the configuration and deployment of Gardener as well as the necessary upgrade processes. The open source tool supports IT teams running self-hosted Gardener clusters by providing a centralised operator to manage the cluster control plane, streamlining lifecycle management tasks.

So far, Yake has been developed by ALASCA members 23 Technologies GmbH and STACKIT. However, we would like to invite other open source supporters and enthusiasts to actively participate in the future development. Give Yake a try yourself and let us know how you like it.

In addition to Yake, we have Krake an open source tool for the management of energy-efficiencyoptimised, distributed workloads within the association.

Krake Logo | The open source software for intelligent, distributed workload management

Krake is an orchestrator engine for containerised and virtualised workloads on distributed and heterogeneous cloud platforms. With Krake, cloud users can distribute their virtual workloads - in addition to typical metrics such as hardware, latencies and costs - primarily according to energy-efficient criteria. Krake does this by creating a thin aggregation layer on the various platforms (such as OpenStack or Kubernetes) and making it available to the cloud user via a single interface.

The development of Krake was initiated by ALASCA member Cloud&Heat Technologies and significantly co-developed by dNation. We would be delighted if we could win you over as further contributors.
